Task 1c: Rigid Pavement Design – Asphalt Pavement Containing
Cemented Material Subbase and an Unbound Granular Layer
This task is the third component in the compilation of your Thesis A submission. Your work
requirement is an individual submission and the weighing for this task is 25% as detailed in
the Course Outline.
In this Assessment Task it is expected that you will be developing the solution following the
steps outlined in the Guide to Pavement Technology Part 2 – Pavement Structural Design.

In this Assessment Task (as you are now familiar with the layout and structure of the Design
Manual) you are required to follow the steps in Appendix N involved in the design of a Rigid
Pavement as a Plain Concrete Pavement (PCP) of the Guide to Pavement Technology Part 2 –
Pavement Structural Design. (Austroads Publication No. AGPT02-17)
Using Appendix N and other references, you are to complete:
1. An acceptable rigid pavement design for your data set listed below, by
completing multiple trials.
2. In your submission you are to provide an outline of the appropriate jointing
systems (including reinforcement detail) needed for your PCP pavement design.
3. Your submission should also contain detail on the construction methods used and
an explanation of how the joints in the PCP would be formed on site. (You need
to support your explanation by references.)
4. In this submission you are to provide a referenced outline of the advantages
offered by rigid pavement design over other pavement designs. Your written
outline is not to exceed three pages plus your Reference List. It is expected that
you will draw on at least 8 reference sources in answering this section, and all
referencing is to be to the Harvard standard.
Each of these 4 components will carry equal marks weighting within your submission.
In preparing your submission you are required to submit your calculations, so ensure that they
are readable and are sufficient in detail that the Marker can trace the progress of your design.

Consider a period/genre that you would like to learn more about (medieval, Georgian, Victorian, Modernist, post-war, Post-Modern, High-Tech, etc)
•Consider a building type you would like to study (housing, a school, a department store, a sports stadium, a museum, a factory, a bridge, etc.)
•The essay should be 2000 words max.
•The essay should generally follow this format:
— Introduction – a paragraph setting out what building/site you are discussing, make sure you have name, date, architect in first paragraph to introduce the subject.
— History of the building’s origins and development – a page probably
— A narrative Description of the building’s form, materials, style, layers and additions, relationship to other buildings, etc. Consider Building, Description, Architect, Materials, Plan, Exterior, Interior, Setting, etc.
— Assessment of the building (why is it significant? what do you think about its design? Is it a success? Did it influence other buildings in London or elsewhere? How does it relate architecturally to its neighbours? What is special about its design or history that makes it particularly noteworthy?) This forms the main body of your essay
— Concluding paragraph
— Illustrations these should largely be your own sketches, made on the several visits to the building in question, and of course photographs. These should include, at the minimum: a plan, an elevation and details. If you prefer to keep your original sketches in your sketchbook, it is fine to include copies of these with your essay and I will see the originals when assessing your sketchbook. You can include illustrations separately at the end or integrate them into the essay, whichever you prefer. Either way, you must specifically refer to your sketches, photographs, etc. in the text and use them to illustrate the points you are making.
— Bibliography you must properly cite your work (using endnotes or footnotes and including a bibliography).
Similarly, the RIBA library will be an important resource for your essay and also features architectural exhibitions and lectures.
