2:Image Analysis
Paper details:
Take your image from Assignment #3 and read the corresponding text of the narrative (sources are on Blackboard or on Art Closed Reserve for Genji). For some of you it will be a poem, for others, it will be a particular chapter from the Tale of Genji. Look back at the image and your visual analysis and compare and contrast how image and text present the story. A text may contain a lot of specific detail, more than in the image, but an image can operate in ways a text cannot. You may not see these upon first glance, as visual strategies operate differently than textual ones.
For example, what motif or scene is selected to represent? What visual elements are utilized to highlight key aspects or moments of the story? What features of the tale are brought out, and by what means? What elements of the written tale are downplayed? How does the pictorial narrative utilize different strategies to condense a linear narrative into a pictorial scene? If it doesn’t follow a textual structure, what kind of logic does it follow?
Construct an argument that captures the crux of these difference and highlights the visual strategies you identified in your previous assignment
