2.  Ontology

 

Exam consist of ten short essay questions; by ‘short essay’ I mean that a paragraph of between six and fifteen sentences shouldsufficefor an answer to each question.

All of the questions will be derived from the topics that are discussed in the Instructor’s Notes.

Questions will typically have more than one part, so be sure to answer each part in your paragraph. Aim for clarity and detail in your answers.  Be sure to answer each part of each question.   • What do we study in ontology? Explain in your own words the difference between materialism and dualism.  Explain in your own words the difference between discrete individual objects and properties and events, giving examples of your own devising as you do so.

 

  • State Zeno of Elea’s argument discussed in the Instructor’s Notes that motion is impossible; then explain each premise in your own words. Then construct an objection to the argument.

 

  • What are at least three of the questions that we study in epistemology? What is Plato’s definition of knowledge?  Present one problem for each component of Plato’s definition.

 

  • Explain in your own words the difference between a priori knowledge and a posteriori Give an example of your own devising of each kind of knowledge.  What is global skepticism?  Explain in your own words how Descartes’ argument for global skepticism works.

 

  • Explain in your own words the classical problem of induction. Why can’t we solve the classical problem of induction by saying that we know from past experience that the future will replicate the past?  What conclusion does Goodman draw in his new problem of induction, and how does he argue for that conclusion?

 

  • What is one difficulty for supposing that the meaning of a proper name just is the object that the name stands for? What is one difficulty for supposing that a name like ‘Pegasus’ stands for an idea?  What is one difficulty for the Verificationist Principle of meaning?

 

  • Explain what is wrong with an argument that commits the fallacy of equivocation. Give an example of your own devising of an argument that commits the fallacy of equivocation and explain why the argument commits that fallacy.

 

  • What does it mean to say that a question is a metaphysical question, and what does it mean to say that a question is an epistemological question? Give an example of each.  What does formalism say about the nature of mathematics, and what is one problem for formalism?

 

  • State the ontological argument for the existence of God. Explain how the argument works in your own words, and construct an objection to the argument.  State the paradox of the stone, and suggest how we might address that paradox.

 

  • Describe the different jobs that metaethics and normative ethics State the Libertarian argument in favor of property rights and explain how it works in your own words. Construct an objection to that argument.
